Bladder Cancer Risk Factors

Researchers have identified several risk factors for bladder cancer. However, it is important to note that just because a person may have one or more of these risk factors does not mean the individual will develop this disease. Some risk factors associated with bladder cancer include:

  • Smoking: Smoking is the greatest risk factor for bladder cancer. Smokers get bladder cancer twice as often as people who don't smoke.
  • Exposure to certain substances: Rubber, certain dyes and textiles, pain, and hairdressing supplies.
  • Diets high in fried meats and fats.
  • Being older, male or Caucasian.
  • Having an infection caused by certain parasites
