Stoddard Events
Our goal to provide cancer education and outreach extends far outside the walls of the John Stoddard Cancer Center. We organize and attend many events throughout central Iowa to provide cancer information to the community. We dedicate our time and resources to these events because we know that education and research is vital in the fight against cancer.
Visit our Classes and Events page for more information on all of our support groups, events, classes and educational conferences.
The John Stoddard Rally Against Cancer raises funds to assist patients and families at the John Stoddard Cancer Center. The 2011 Rally was held Saturday, January 29, and featured former Ohio State standout, Detroit Lions Linebacker, four time pro-bowler, and color analyst for ESPN college football Chris Spielman. View photos from the 2012 event.
The 2013 Rally Against Cancer will be held January 26.
Cancer Survivors Day
Cancer Survivors Day is a national event that John Stoddard Cancer Center celebrates locally every year with survivors and their families. John Stoddard Cancer Center hosted a Cancer Survivors Day Celebration at Plaza Lanes Bowling Alley on Sunday, June 12. Over 200 survivors and guests were in attendance for lunch and a fun-filled day of bowling, sand volleyball, and bingo. View photos from the event.
LiveWell Events
Through the Iowa Health - Des Moines LiveWell program, Stoddard holds various events throughout the year to education the public about cancer awareness and prevention. Events have included Girls Night in the Village, Cancer, Courage and Chocolate and various lunch and learns (past events have covered breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, radiation oncology, and oral, head and neck cancer).
Free Screening Events
With the help of many local physicians, clinics, community organizations and Iowa Health hospitals, Stoddard is able to provide free mammograms, free colonoscopies and free skin cancer screenings to many of those in need in central Iowa. We will continue to find ways to offer these vital screenings in the years to come.
Community Events
Many local organizations hold cancer fundraising events throughout the year. Stoddard is actively involved in many of those events, including American Cancer Society (ACS) Daffodil Days, ACS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's Walk for the Whisper, ACS Hoops for Hope Coaches vs. Cancer, Penny's Pieathlon, ACS Relay for Life, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk, Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure and many others. Stoddard donates staff time, fundraising dollars, gifts-in-kind and cancer education materials to these events and we consider them an important part of our outreach activities.
