Treatment
Our cancer patients are assured of the most aggressive new methods, advanced treatment options and leading edge technology available today. Procedures which are currently available in only a handful of national cancer centers are offered here, as are effective new drugs. Many treatment procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing lifestyles to continue with minimal disruption.
Treatments may involve the following or a combination of these elements:
One of the most significant and progressive cancer treatments known is the field of radiation oncology. Iowa Methodist was the state's first provider of this therapy in 1956. Today, we offer the latest radiation oncology technology such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery.
Another potent weapon used to destroy cancer cells or halt their growth is chemotherapy. Traveling through the bloodstream, the drugs attack invading cells and interfere with their ability to multiply. Our cancer center patients receive advanced chemotherapeutic protocols from a highly trained and specialized staff, known as much for their kindness as their clinical expertise.
When surgical removal is recommended, patients have the advantage of a superb surgical facility. The operating suites at Iowa Methodist are models of advanced surgical technology.
