Types of Bladder Cancer

There are three types of bladder cancer.

  •  Transitional cell carcinoma is cancer that begins in cells in the innermost tissue.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma begins in squamous cells.
  • Adenocarcinoma begins in glandular (secretory) cells. Glandular cells in the bladder's lining produce and release fluids such as mucus.

Cancer confined to the lining is considered superficial cancer. Invasive cancer is cancer that begins in the transitional cells and may spread through the lining to invade the bladder's muscle wall or spread to nearby organs and lymph nodes.
